\u00ab\u00a01909. 601 West 61st Street. A New Colony of Colored People, or Malindy in Little Africa\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0More striking to Ovington than the crime and the blight was the beauty of black folks. Whether in San Juan Hill or in the hills of Jamaica, she found the dark bronze faces, the plum and purple lips, the brilliant eyes, the handsome figures, and the regal carriages of the Negroes so lovely. Her brother-in-law, sharing this admiration for the beauty of the darker race, teased her: \u201cShe was attacking Negro equality the wrong way. Just get a law passed that everyone must go nude. Then you\u2019d get not equality but Negro superiority.\u201d In her eyes, the Negro quarter was Little Africa. It was characterized by the torpor and pleasure of the libertine colony, by the license that made dark bodies available for sale and use. Within this distinctive geography, gender norms and sexual mores were \u201cinverted, mocked or completely ignored\u201d; keenly apparent was the gulf between her life and the lives of her black neighbors.<\/p>\n

The color line in the city was as deep and wide as the ocean. She traversed it, preferring the Negro world and breathing easily again when engulfed in the sea of black faces, when lingering in a \u201ccool tenement hallway\u201d in the company of \u201cstout, good-natured colored women,\u201d reluctant to enter their private flats and \u201cslow to turn the latches of their door.\u201d The \u201cceaseless sounds of humanity filled the air.\u201d The bedrooms opened up to airshafts, which were conduits for sounds, passageways for the collective life of the tenement. This noise, if not a kind of music, at the very least, inspired it. Ethel Waters made music of it, all the sounds of life, the loving and fighting and laughter and suffering, and described the deprivation and vitality of cramped living from the inside: \u201cI would hear a couple in another flat arguing, for instance. Their voices would come up the airshaft and I\u2019d listen, making up stories about their spats and their love life. I could hear such an argument in the afternoon and that night sing a whole song about it. I\u2019d sing out their woes to the tune of my blues music.\u201d Ellington also prized the airshaft and the sounds of life it conveyed: \u201cYou hear fights, you smell dinner, you hear people making love. You hear intimate gossip floating down.\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0An airshaft is one great loudspeaker. You see your neighbors\u2019 laundry. You hear the janitor\u2019s dogs.\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0An airshaft has got every contrast.\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0You hear people praying, fighting, snoring.\u201d You might hear a woman in a rear tenement \u201ccalling her husband out of the front house and threatening death to the degraded creature who had lured him in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Il aurait suffi de faire passer une loi obligeant tout le monde \u00e0 se d\u00e9nuder. Ce n’est pas l’\u00e9galit\u00e9 que vous auriez obtenu, mais la sup\u00e9riorit\u00e9 des Noirs\u00a0\u00bb. Pour elle, le quartier n\u00e8gre \u00e9tait la Petite Afrique. Il se caract\u00e9rise par la torpeur et le plaisir de la colonie libertine, par la licence qui rend les corps sombres disponibles \u00e0 la vente et \u00e0 l’utilisation. Dans cette g\u00e9ographie particuli\u00e8re, les normes de genre et les m\u0153urs sexuelles sont \u00ab\u00a0invers\u00e9es, moqu\u00e9es ou compl\u00e8tement ignor\u00e9es\u00a0\u00bb ; le gouffre entre sa vie et celle de ses voisins noirs \u00e9tait flagrant.<\/p>\n

La ligne de d\u00e9marcation de couleur dans la ville est aussi profonde et large que l’oc\u00e9an. Elle la traversait, pr\u00e9f\u00e9rant le monde noir et respirant \u00e0 nouveau ais\u00e9ment lorsqu’elle se trouvait engloutie dans la mer des visages noirs, lorsqu’elle s’attardait dans un \u00ab\u00a0couloir frais d’immeuble\u00a0\u00bb en compagnie de \u00ab\u00a0femmes de couleur robustes et de bonne humeur\u00a0\u00bb, r\u00e9ticentes \u00e0 entrer dans leurs appartements priv\u00e9s et \u00ab\u00a0lentes \u00e0 tourner les verrous de leur porte\u00a0\u00bb. Les \u00ab\u00a0bruits incessants de l’humanit\u00e9 emplissent l’air\u00a0\u00bb. Les chambres s’ouvrent sur des conduits d’a\u00e9ration, qui sont autant de voies d’acc\u00e8s aux sons, de passages pour la vie collective de l’immeuble. Ce bruit, s’il n’est pas une musique, l’inspire. Ethel Waters en a fait de la musique, tous les sons de la vie, les amours, les disputes, les rires et les souffrances, et a d\u00e9crit de l’int\u00e9rieur le d\u00e9nuement et la vitalit\u00e9 de la vie \u00e0 l’\u00e9troit : \u00ab\u00a0J’entendais un couple dans un autre appartement se disputer, par exemple. Leurs voix montaient dans le conduit d’a\u00e9ration et j’\u00e9coutais, inventant des histoires sur leurs disputes et leur vie amoureuse. Je pouvais entendre une telle dispute dans l’apr\u00e8s-midi et, le soir m\u00eame, chanter toute une chanson \u00e0 ce sujet. Je chantais leurs malheurs sur un air de blues\u00a0\u00bb. Ellington appr\u00e9ciait \u00e9galement les conduits de ventilation et les sons de la vie qu’ils v\u00e9hiculaient : \u00ab\u00a0Vous entendez des bagarres, vous sentez l’odeur du d\u00eener, vous entendez des gens faire l’amour. Vous entendez des ragots intimes qui descendent en flottant… . . Un conduit de ventilation est un grand haut-parleur. Vous voyez le linge de vos voisins. Vous entendez les chiens du concierge… . . Un conduit de ventilation est riche de tous les contrastes. . . . Vous entendez les gens prier, se battre, ronfler\u00a0\u00bb. Vous pouvez entendre une femme dans un immeuble du fond \u00ab\u00a0appeler son mari hors de la maison de devant et menacer de mort la cr\u00e9ature d\u00e9grad\u00e9e qui l’a attir\u00e9 ici\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Ethel Waters est une des premi\u00e8res (et \u00e0 jamais une des plus belles et des plus g\u00e9niales) chanteuses de blues\/jazz.<\/p>\n

Mary White Ovington est une suffragette am\u00e9ricaine qui fit scandale en pr\u00e9f\u00e9rant la compagnie des noirs, et fonda la National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Elle fonda \u00e9galement avec le grand W.E.B Du Bois le Niagar Movement. Dans son livre, cite quelques extraits de Half a Man<\/em> (co-\u00e9crit en 1911 avec le grand papa de l’ethnologie am\u00e9ricaine, Franz Boas)<\/a> qui se fonde sur l’exp\u00e9rience de Ovington \u00e0 Manhattan.<\/p>\n
